His flying experience spans Atlantic, Alaskan, Gulf of Mexico and Great Lakes regions, and includes 9 years as a flight examiner. He served as the pilot curriculum and flight simulator integrator at the service's Aviation Training Center during phase-in of the Sikorsky HH-60J helicopter, visiting all units operating the aircraft to evaluate flight safety and standardization. As Operations Director at the service's then-largest Air Station in Clearwater, FL, he oversaw fixed and rotary-wing operations across the southeastern US and Caribbean basin. Astute leadership and aviation professionalism punctuated his rise to the rank of Captain (O6) and saw him entrusted with command of USCG Air Stations in Traverse City, MI and Atlantic City, NJ.
